Walk The Walk: Deciding Who Should Escort You Down The Aisle

by Mia Bolaris-Forget (Staff Writer)

Ah, the concept of modern love. It can leave many a couple, hoping to adhere to “tradition” confused about what’s appropriate and what’s not when it comes to nowadays nuptials.

Take for instance the bride with two dads, a biological father and a step-father, both whom she’s very close with, as well as a mom she respects admires and adores…and perhaps even a step-mother who has been and remained instrumental in her life.

How do you choose who will walk you down the aisle without hurting anyone’s feelings or compromising your own.

The good news is that you don’t have to. While most customs came about during a time when family specifically meant biological relatives, that has long since changed and for many become the accepted norm

With that said, it’s important to note, that the “rules” have also changed to accommodate the times. And what was once “taboo” can often be considered quite common.

Consider then marching to the beat of your own drummer when it comes to who escorts you to your new life.

In fact, why not make it a family affair? More than one mom (whom you love), include them both, the same goes for dads. In fact you can have one parent or couple on each arm. And, the groom can honor his family by doing the same, rather than waiting patiently up at the alter. Remember, symbolically the bride was given away by her father as she was “transferred” from his protection to her husband’s. For most, that simply no longer is the case, in fact, mom and dad are merely there for love and support, so why not show YOUR support by supporting all those who’ve been there for you.
